Support of Nabil Al-Raee and the Freedom Theatre
In July 2011, during the 23rd Rencontres du Jeune Théâtre Européen , the Freedom Theatre from Jenin, West Bank, was hosted by the cultural association named Crearc in Grenoble. The company presented “Sho Kman”, which was directed by Nabil Al-Raee.
The Freedom Theatre was created by Juliano Mer Khamis and is based at Jenin refugee camp. It was created after and in memory of the work of his mother, Arna Mer, who was a drama teacher for the children from the camp. Her goal was to help them to escape, both psychologically and bodily, from distress related to the Occupation.
Juliano Mer Khamis was murdered one year ago in Jenin. The reasons of his death are still unknown. Although the company has been threatened ever since, this incident has not stopped them from valiantly doing theatrical art as means of resistance.
On 6th June 2012, before dawn, Nabil Al-Raee, artistic director and stage director of the Freedom Theatre, was at home when he was arrested and taken away by Israeli soldiers, without being given any reason. It was not until the following day that his family found out that he was detained at Jalameh detention centre, in the north of Jenin, with no charge against him and no possibility to be assisted by a lawyer.
The spirit and values of Crearc and the Rencontres du Jeune Théâtre Européen are based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In light of these events, we think it is essential to recall articles 9 and 19 :
Article 9 : “No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile.”
Article 19 : “Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression ; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.”
This is the reason why Crearc and the Rencontres du Jeune Théâtre Européen demand these fundamental rights to be complied with in Nabil Al-Raee and the Freedom Theatre affairs.
